Ok, so this post is going to date me a bit, but it’s not like I don’t look my age so…here goes.
My husband and I bought our first home in 1984. It was a small, all brick story and a half in Cincinnati. We paid $47,500 but upped it to $49,000 the reason for which is a whole ‘nother blog post.
We bought this house on Salmar Court and I couldn’t wait to tear into it! Unfortunately my “to do” list was far longer than our income would allow, but the one change I was super excited about was adding wallpaper to our Kitchen and Dining Room.
Yep! Those of you who were home owners back then know what I’m talking about. We were getting out of the orange and olive green of the 70’s and into the pink and gray/blues of the 80’s.
Country blue in the Kitchen and a contrasting pattern of some kind of flower in ivory, green, pink and blue in the Dining Room….with a chair rail too! If you look at the photos of when the house last sold, you’ll see somewhere over the years, the owners removed or painted over the wall paper (but my chair rail is still there!!)
I share this story because my little house is a classic example of how trends change. My wall paper was awesome at the time. But trends change and clearly, between 1987 (when we sold) and 2014 (when zillow photos were taken) someone decided that wall paper was
hideous not for them.
Wallpaper continued to be popular into the early 90’s. And I still go on listing appointments every now and then which have wall-paper in the Kitchen, Den, or other rooms. The problem is, it’s wall paper from the 90’s….and most home buyers don’t want to have to hassle with taking it down or painting over it.
For a long time now, wall paper has been a pretty big deterrent to buyers and sellers have had to accept lower offers on their homes to offset this undesirable aesthetic.
But as with most things style-wise, what was once “out” is now becoming “in” again….but with a more modern flair.
